"Where do I start?"
It's the question we hear most at the Brouwersdam and we love answering it. Before you look at gear, ask yourself one question: where are you going to wingfoil? Your spot, your weight and your level determine everything. The right wing, the right board, the right foil. We've put the complete sets together so you don't have to figure it out alone.

What size wing do I need?
It depends on your weight. That's the honest answer and it's simpler than most people think.
- Between 70 and 85 kg: go for a 5 to 5.5 metre
- Under 70 kg: go for a 4.5 to 5 metre wing
- Above 85 kg: you want a 5.5 to 6.5 metre
These sizes are based on average wind conditions of around 15–20 knots. In lighter wind, go one size up. Not sure? Come in and we'll figure it out together.
What foil size do I need?
A bigger front wing gives you more lift at lower speeds — exactly what you want as a beginner. As a starting point:
- Under 70 kg: 1500 – 1800 cm²
- Between 70 and 85 kg: 1700 – 2000 cm²
- Above 85 kg: 1900 – 2400 cm²
Once you're comfortable on the foil, you can step down in size for more speed and response.
How much board volume do I need?
Your board volume depends on your level — not just your weight
- Just starting out? = your weight + 30–40 litres
- Already foiling and looking for a good deal? = your weight + 5 or 10 litres
More volume means more float and easier take-offs. A bigger board gives you more lift and makes it easier to get going — exactly what you need when you're learning. As you progress, you can step down in size for a more playful feel.
How do I choose between the sets?
Once you know your sizes, ask yourself a few questions: what brand speaks to you? What's your budget? What are the conditions at your local spot? And how much time do you have to practise?
All the sets we carry are A-brands: F-one, Duotone, North and Slingshot. At beginner level the performance difference between brands is small. It really comes down to feel and preference. Want more than one set or a custom combination? Get in touch and we'll put together a personal offer.
Still not sure? Stop by in our shop at the Brouwersdam and we'll help you pick the right setup.
Should I book a lesson before buying?
Yes! If you've never wingfoiled before, always book a lesson first. After one or two sessions you'll know exactly what setup suits you best and you'll make a much better decision. Our instructors teach at the Brouwersdam and can advise you on gear directly after your lesson
