"Where do I start?"
It's the question we hear most at the Brouwersdam and we love answering it. Before you look at gear, ask yourself one question: where are you going to kite? Your spot, your weight and your harness fit determine everything. The right kite, the right board, the right harness. We've put the complete sets together so you don't have to figure it out alone.
Want the full breakdown? Watch Calle walk through everything in our video guide.
What size kite do I need?
It depends on your weight. That's the honest answer and it's simpler than most people think.
- Under 70 kg: go for a 9 to 10 metre kite
- Between 70 and 85 kg: go for an 11 metre kite
- Above 85 kg: you want a 12 metre kite
These sizes are based on average wind conditions at a coastal spot like the Brouwersdam, around 17–24 knots. Riding inland? Go one size up. Not sure? Come in and we'll figure it out together.
What board size do I need?
A bigger board gives you more lift and makes it easier to get going. Exactly what you need when you're learning.
- Under 70 kg: 136 – 138 cm
- Between 70 and 85 kg: 138 – 141 cm
- Above 85 kg: 141 – 148 cm
As you progress, you can step down in size for a more playful feel.
Find your harness
The harness is one of the most important and most personal parts of your kite setup. All the power of your kite runs through the hook and into your body. A good fit protects your back and transfers that power directly to your board. A bad fit? You'll feel it after every single session.
Never buy a harness without trying it on first. Come into our shop at the Brouwersdam and we'll make sure it fits before you buy.
How do I choose between the sets?
Once you know your sizes, ask yourself a few questions: what brand speaks to you? What's your budget? Where do you kite: inland or coastal? And how much time do you have to practise?
All the sets we carry are A-brands: Duotone, Core, North, F-one and Slingshot. At beginner level the performance difference between brands is small. It really comes down to feel and preference. Want more than one set or a custom combination? Get in touch and we'll put together a personal offer.
Still not sure? Stop by in our shop at the Brouwersdam and we'll help you pick the right setup.
Should I book a lesson before buying?
Yes and this isn't optional. Kitesurfing without proper instruction is genuinely dangerous, both for you and for others on the water. A lesson teaches you the safety systems, wind awareness and the basics you simply can't learn from a video.
It's also the smartest way to buy. After one or two sessions you'll know exactly what setup suits you best, and you'll make a much better decision. Our instructors teach at the Brouwersdam and can advise you on gear directly after your lesson.
