5mm Wetsuits Men

Looking for a warm wetsuit? A 5/4 wetsuit gets you through late autumn, winter and early spring. When the wind is strong, the sky is grey and the spot is empty, this is the suit that keeps you riding.

A 5/4 has 5mm neoprene around your core and 4mm on your arms and legs, sometimes with 3mm panels at the shoulders for extra freedom (a 5/4/3). Warm enough for long winter sessions, flexible enough to paddle, pump and jump.

Winter doesn't forgive a bad fit. Every gap lets cold water in, so your 5/4 should be snug everywhere, with no loose folds and full freedom in your shoulders. Add boots, gloves and a hood and you're ready for the season most people skip.

Another very important thing to keep in mind is the fit. A 5mm wetsuit needs to fit like a second skin.

Which winter wetsuit do you need?

Winter asks more of your wetsuit than any other season. The cold, the wind, how long you're out and how quickly you get cold all decide which suit keeps you on the water. Kiting or winging? Then the wind counts even more. Here's how our winter range breaks down.

4/3 wetsuits: the in-between

For spring, early autumn and fresh days. The bridge between your summer suit and your winter suit.

5/4 wetsuits: the winter workhorse

From late autumn through winter and into early spring. Serious warmth, still flexible enough to ride hard.

6mm wetsuits: for the coldest days

Maximum warmth for deep winter, long sessions and anyone who gets cold easily.

In winter, your wetsuit is only half of your setup. Boots, gloves and a hood keep you warm where you lose heat fastest. Still not sure? Send us a message or come by one of our shops. We ride through the winter ourselves, so we'll tell you honestly what you need.

How to choose your winter wetsuit:

What wetsuit thickness do I need in winter?

For most winter sessions, a 5/4 with boots, gloves and a hood is the standard choice. On the coldest days or during long sessions, a 6mm keeps you warmer. In early and late season, a 4/3 can still be enough.

What's the difference between a 5mm and a 6mm wetsuit?

A 6mm has thicker neoprene, so it keeps you warmer for longer, but it's slightly less flexible. A 5/4 is the all-round winter suit, and a 6mm is for the coldest conditions or for anyone who gets cold easily.

What do I need besides a winter wetsuit?

Boots, gloves and a hood. You lose a lot of heat through your feet, hands and head, so these often decide how long you can stay out. Check our winter surf sets for a complete setup.

Can I kitesurf or wingfoil in winter?

Yes, winter can bring some of the best wind of the year. Because you're out of the water in the wind, wind chill hits hard, so a warm suit, good gloves and a hood are essential.

Do I need a thicker wetsuit for kiting or winging than for surfing in winter?

Often, yes. Surfers stay warm by paddling and spend most of their time in the water. Kiters and wingers are exposed to the wind for longer, so many go for a 6mm or add extra layers on the coldest days.

Why do I need a poncho in winter?

Because the coldest part of a winter session is often after you get out. Wind on wet skin cools you down fast, and changing on a cold beach is no fun. A poncho keeps you warm and covered while you get out of your wetsuit and into dry clothes. Put it on straight after your session and you'll be warm again in minutes.

Can I get advice before I buy a wetsuit?

Absolutely. Send us a message or come by our shops at Brouwersdam or Ouddorp Duin to try suits on. Tell us how, where and when you ride, and we'll help you find the suit that fits.

Is Natural High open in winter?

Yes, on selected days. The Brouwersdam in winter means empty spots, strong wind and a hot chocolate after your session. Need a new winter suit, or just want to warm up after riding? Come by the shop at the Dam. Our opening days vary in winter, so keep an eye on our Instagram for the latest updates.
