Where is the best kitesurfing spot in the Netherlands?
The Brouwersdam in Zeeland is one of the best-known kitesurfing spots in the Netherlands. With wind above 12 knots on roughly 300 days a year and different spots for different wind directions, it is one of the most reliable places to ride.
When one side of the dam is not working, you can often drive a few hundred metres and find better conditions on the other side.
Is the Brouwersdam good for beginners?
Yes. The Kitesurf Area right in front of Natural High is one of the most beginner-friendly kitesurfing spots in the Netherlands.
De Ooster, the offshore sandbank in front of the Brouwersdam, blocks much of the open sea swell. This creates flatter, shallower water close to shore, making it a great place to learn kitesurfing safely with an instructor.
For wingfoiling, the Grevelingen side offers a lot of flat water spots with plenty of space and without currents or tide
Where can I learn wingfoiling near the Brouwersdam?
The best places to start wingfoiling near the Brouwersdam are the Werkhaven on the Brouwersdam and Kabbelaarsbank on the Grevelingen.
Both spots offer flat water, easy access and more sheltered conditions than the open North Sea. Natural High offers wingfoil lessons and test gear, so ask the team which spot fits your level and the forecast of the day.
What is the Grevelingen and why is it good for water sports?
The Grevelingen is the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe and one of the best flat-water spots near the Brouwersdam.
There is no tide and no current pulling at you, which makes it ideal for learning or progressing in wingfoiling, parawinging and foiling. The water stays relatively flat in many wind directions, giving riders a safe and controlled place to practise.
Please note: kitesurfing is strictly prohibited on the Grevelingen.
Where can experienced riders find more swell near the Brouwersdam?
At Ouddorp. If you are looking for waves near the Brouwersdam, head towards Ouddorp.
At Ouddorp, the protective sandbank ends and the North Sea takes over. Hekje Buiten is the wave spot for experienced kite, wing and parawing riders. The waves usually start to build from around 20 knots of wind.
Strong currents can build from about two hours before high tide, so always check the forecast, tide and current before heading out. This is not a beginner spot.
Where can I kitesurf near Ouddorp?
Kitesurfing is allowed near Ouddorp at Ouddorp Beach and Hekje Buiten.
Ouddorp Beach offers relatively flat water for a North Sea spot, thanks to the remaining sandbank along this part of the coast. Hekje Buiten is more exposed and is mainly suited for wave riding.
Both spots require experience, good forecast reading and awareness of current, tide and changing North Sea conditions.
Where can I learn to surf near the Brouwersdam?
The Natural High surf school is based at Ouddorp Duin, where surf lessons are available. The best conditions are northerly swell with a long period. Mick and the instructor team are on location to help you get started safely.
What watersports can I practise at the Brouwersdam?
The Brouwersdam has dedicated spots for kitesurfing, wing foiling, parawing and kite foiling. Note: the Foil Zone and the Werkhaven are foil-only spots, regular kitesurfing is not permitted there.
Can I go downwind surfing near the Brouwersdam?
Yes. Hekje Buiten near Ouddorp is one of the best spots in the area for downwind sessions with a parawing or wing.
On an outgoing tide with SW wind, you can find clean windswell from around 500 metres offshore. This makes it one of the Natural High team’s favorite spots for downwind riding.
Hekje Buiten is for experienced riders only. Always check the wind, tide, current and forecast before heading out.
The Brouwersdam South spot provides nice smaller DW bumps on a Strong NE wind with incoming tide. The Foil Zone (north side) has the same kind of conditions on a strong SW wind.
