With wind above 12 knots on roughly 300 days a year, four distinct spots and conditions that work from almost every direction, the Brouwersdam is one of the most versatile watersport locations in the Netherlands.
What makes it truly unique: De Ooster, a protected sandbank roughly 5 kilometres offshore, blocks the breaking waves and creates safe, controlled conditions close to shore.

Spot 1: Brouwersdam South
Already comfortable with foiling? This is the go-to wing and parawing spot on the southern end of the Brouwersdam. Park right at the spot, no seaweed, deep enough for an easy launch and perfect for taking your first steps into mellow swell and wave riding.
Level: Intermediate to expert
Discipline: Wing & parawing
Best wind direction:
- Best: N & NE.
- Also possible: NNW and anything that isn't offshore. SSW to W is perfect for beginners (flat water).
- Avoid: S and anything offshore
🌊 Best tide: Incoming tide with northerly winds, outgoing tide with southerly winds
⚠️ Watch out: Strong NW wind can create shorebreak on the beach
💬 NH insider tip: Aim for incoming tide, mid to high tide, with N, NE or NNW wind. That’s when the lines start to run.

Spot 2: Brouwersdam Kite Zone
The ultimate beginner and freestyle kite spot, right in front of Natural High. De Ooster, a protected sandbank roughly 5 kilometres offshore, blocks the breaking waves and creates a large shallow standing area at low to mid tide.
One of the safest places in the Netherlands to learn to kite. And when the tide drops, the flatter water behind the sandbanks turns into a freestyle playground for experienced riders. The area is wide and open, making it perfect for beginners and experts.
Level: Beginner to expert
Discipline: Kite
Best wind direction:
- Best: SW, W, N, NE
- Also possible: SW to NE, almost any direction that isn't offshore
- Avoid: Offshore
🌊 Best tide: Low tide. As the tide drops, the chop fades and the water behind the sandbanks gets flatter.
⚠️ Watch out: Strong NW wind can create shorebreak on the beach at launch and landing.
💬 NH insider tip: The best sessions happen when the current runs against the wind. In winter, storm surges can flood the beach entirely and create a massive shallow pool: an absolute dream for flat water lovers.

Spot 3: Brouwersdam Foil Zone
At the northern end of the Brouwersdam beach, this is where the foil community comes together: wing foilers, parawing riders and kite foilers sharing one of the best foil spots in the country.
A natural channel runs just in front of the beach, which means there is enough depth at both low and high tide. With light wind, you get glassy, flat water from SW to NE. From around 17 knots and the right tide, small fun swell starts to build.
Level: Beginner to expert
Discipline: Wing, parawing & foiling. ⚠️ kite foiling is allowed, regular kitesurfing is not

- Best: N, NE, SW to W
- Also possible: SW to N/NE
- Avoid: Offshore
🌊 Best tide: For beginners, low tide is best: less chop, smaller swell and easier conditions to focus on technique. For advanced riders, mid to high tide is where the swell starts to build.
⚠️ Watch out: Kite foiling is allowed, regular kitesurfing is not
💬 NH insider tip: Sunny NE days can deliver a thermal boost, adding 4 to 5 knots on top of the forecast. The colder the water and the warmer the land, the stronger that boost can get.

Spot 4: Brouwersdam Werkhaven
The ultimate beginner spot for wing foiling. A breakwater blocks most of the swell, creating glassy, flat water to practise on, even when it’s choppy everywhere else.
Level: Beginner to expert
Discipline: Wing & foiling. ⚠️ Kitesurfing is not allowed
Best wind direction:
- Best: NW
- Also possible: SW, NE, but NW gives you the full width of the harbor pool
- Avoid: Offshore & super low tides combined with SW or NE (shallow water and sharp oysters)
🌊 Best tide: High tide. The lower the tide, the shallower it gets. The higher the tide, the better the session.
⚠️ Watch out: Oyster beds on the bottom, always wear water shoes (find some shoes here)
💬 NH insider tip: At high tide with SW to W wind, a fun little swell runs through the harbor entrance. Experienced riders use it for freestyle jumps.

Where is the best kitesurfing spot in the Netherlands?
The Brouwersdam in Zeeland is widely considered the number one kitesurfing location in the Netherlands. With wind above 12 knots on roughly 300 days a year and a spot for almost every wind direction, it always delivers. When one spot isn't working, you drive a few hundred metres and find one that does.
Is the Brouwersdam for beginners?
Yes! The Kitesurf Area right in front of Natural High is one of the safest and most beginner-friendly spots in the Netherlands.
De Ooster, the offshore sandbank in front of the Brouwersdam, blocks much of the open sea swell, creating flat, shallow water that is ideal for learning.
For wingfoiling, the Grevelingen side offers a lot of flat water spots with plenty of space and without currents or tide.
What is the best wind direction for the Brouwersdam?
Almost any direction that isn't offshore works at the Brouwersdam. The Kitesurf Area works best with SW, W, N and NE. The wing and parawing area at Brouwersdam Zuid is best with N and NE. The Foil Zone works from SW to NE. Check the spot descriptions above for the full breakdown per spot.
Can I kitesurf at all spots on the Brouwersdam?
No. The Foil Zone and the Werkhaven are foil-only spots. Regular kitesurfing is not permitted there. The Kitesurf Area in front of Natural High is the main kite spot on the Brouwersdam.
Where can I park at the Brouwersdam?
All four spots have free parking. The Kitesurf Area has parking right in front of Natural High. The Foil Zone and Werkhaven also have free parking directly at the spot. Brouwersdam Zuid has free parking all around the spot.
What is De Ooster and why does it matter for kitesurfing?
De Ooster is a protected sandbank roughly 5 kilometres offshore from the Brouwersdam. It blocks the breaking waves from the North Sea, creating safe and controlled conditions close to shore. This is the main reason the Brouwersdam has been the number one learning spot in the Netherlands for decades.
When is the best time to kite foil at the Brouwersdam Foil Zone?
With light wind you get flat water from SW to NE ideal for beginners. From around 17 knots and mid to high tide, small swell starts to build, making it more interesting for advanced riders. One important tip: with NE wind and sun, thermal effect can push the wind 4 to 5 knots stronger than the forecast. size down if you're unsure.
What watersports can I practise at the Brouwersdam?
The Brouwersdam has dedicated spots for kitesurfing, wing foiling, parawing and kite foiling. Note: the Foil Zone and the Werkhaven are foil-only spots, regular kitesurfing is not permitted there.
