The best spot to learn foiling
Cross the dam and you’re in a completely different world. The Grevelingen is 23 kilometres long, the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe, with no tide, no current and no waves pushing back. Flat water as far as you can see. Perfect for your first wingfoil sessions, but also a great place to push your limits without the pressure of swell. This is the guide you need before you hit the water.

Spot 1: Grevelingen - Kabbelaarsbank
The ideal spot to learn foiling. Sheltered, wide and deep enough, with free parking right by the water and an easy walk-in with your gear. One of the best places in the Netherlands to start winging or parawinging.
Level: Beginner to expert
Discipline: Wing, foiling & parawing
Best wind direction:
- Best: S, SE, SW, N & NE, E
- Also possible: NW, W is less suitable due to gusty conditions.
- Avoid: nothing, this spot works with all directions.
🌊 Best conditions: No tide and current, that's the beauty of the Grevelingen
⚠️ Watch out: Kitesurfing is strictly prohibited. During holiday season it can get very busy, arrive early to get a good spot.
💬 NH insider tip: Always wear your shoes. The bottom is covered in sharp oysters and mussels, bare feet are a bad idea. Need shoes? We've got them here
🚙 Parking: Free, all around the spot
Spot 2: Grevelingen - De Punt
One kilometre north of Kabbelaarsbank, you’ll find De Punt. It’s more wind-direction dependent than Kabbelaarsbank, but on the right day, it’s a great place to ride with more space to yourself.
Level: Beginner to expert
Discipline: Wing, foil & parawing. Kitesurfing is strictly prohibited
Best wind direction:
- Best: S, SE
- Also possible: WSW, W, NW, SW, E
- Avoid: N & NE

Is the Grevelingen suitable for beginners?
Yes. Bot spots are ideal to learn wing foiling, parawinging or foiling. Sheltered, wide and deep enough, with free parking right at the water. With no tide and no current, the Grevelingen is one of the most forgiving environments in the Netherlands to start out.
Can I kitesurf on the Grevelingen?
No. Kitesurfing is strictly prohibited on the Grevelingen. Both spots Kabbelaarsbank and De Punt are for wing and parawing only.
What is the best wind direction for the Grevelingen?
The Kabbelaarsbank works with almost any direction: S and SW are optimal, but N, NE, NW, SE and E all work well. Only W is less suitable due to gusty conditions. De Punt works best with S and SE.
Do I need water shoes at the Grevelingen?
Yes always! The bottom at both spots is covered in sharp oysters and mussels. Bare feet are a bad idea. Need shoes? We have them in the shop at Natural High.
Where can I park at the Grevelingen?
All spots have free parking in front of the spot.
What is the difference between the Kabbelaarsbank and De Punt?
The Kabbelaarsbank is the busier of the two spots, sheltered, wide and ideal for beginners and intermediate riders. De Punt is a kilometre further north, quieter and more wind-direction dependent. Best with S and SE wind, and not suitable with N or NE.
Is there a tide on the Grevelingen?
No, and that is exactly what makes it so special. The Grevelingen has no tide and no current, meaning flat water conditions throughout the day regardless of the time. This makes it one of the most consistent flat water locations in the Netherlands.
What watersports can I practise at the Grevelingen?
The Grevelingen has dedicated spots for wing, parawing and foiling. Note: regular kitesurfing is not permitted there.
