Time to Switch: Your Winter Wetsuit Is Waiting

Autumn is here. The days are getting shorter, the air is getting fresher and your summer suit is starting to feel a little thin. That means one thing: it's time to make the switch. No more shivering on the beach after your session. No more heading in early because you're cold. Winter wetsuit season is here, and the best sessions are still ahead.

Fit matters even more in winter

In summer, a small gap is annoying. In winter, it's cold water flushing straight in. A winter wetsuit should feel like a second skin: snug around your neck, wrists and ankles, with no loose folds at your lower back or under your arms. The difference is in the material. Winter suits use thicker neoprene, often with thermal lining and sealed seams, so you stay warm without losing your freedom to move. Since sizing varies across brands, always check the specific size chart or ask our team for help finding your perfect fit.

What thickness do I need for autumn and winter?

Winter wetsuits are thicker and warmer than their summer counterparts, built to keep you on the water when the conditions get cold. Here's what we recommend:

  • 4mm wetsuit: the in-between suit, perfect for early autumn and those fresh days when summer isn't quite over yet.
  • 5mm wetsuit: the winter go-to, from late autumn through winter and into early spring.
  • 6mm wetsuit: maximum warmth for the coldest days, long sessions and anyone who gets cold easily.

Kiting or winging? You spend more time in the wind, so many riders go one step thicker. Not sure which fits your sessions? Come by the shop at Brouwersdam, we'll help you figure it out.

How do I know it's time to switch to my winter wetsuit?

Your summer suit served you well. But once autumn sets in, a 3/2 will have you cold before you've caught your first wave or kited your first run. If you're shivering before your session is over, that's your sign.

What else do I need besides a wetsuit?

In winter, your wetsuit is only half of your setup. These make all the difference:

  • Winter boots: thicker and warmer than summer booties, to keep cold feet from ending your session
  • Gloves: for warm hands and a better grip on your bar, boom or rails
  • Hoods: you lose a lot of heat through your head, so a hood keeps you out there longer
  • Ponchos: for changing on the beach without freezing
  • Wetsuit care products: to keep your winter suit performing all season

Stay warm after your session

The coldest part of a winter session is often after you get out. Wind on wet skin cools you down fast, which is why a poncho is a must in winter. Throw it on straight after your session, change quickly and warm up in minutes.

Even better: come warm up at the Dam. We're open on selected days in winter, so drop by for a hot chocolate after your session. Keep an eye on our Instagram to see when we're open.

Wash your summer wetsuit

Before your summer wetsuit goes to sleep, give it the care it deserves. Rinse it with wetsuit shampoo and check its condition: are the seams and zippers still in good shape, or is it time for a small repair? A clean, well-checked wetsuit means it's ready to go the moment summer comes back. Check all Wetsuit Care & Repair essentials.
