Time to Switch: Your Summer Wetsuit Is Waiting
Summer is almost there. The water temperature at Brouwersdam is rising and that means one thing: it's time to make the switch. No more wrestling with your 5/4 on the beach. No more overheating before you even hit the water. Summer wetsuit season is here, and you deserve an upgrade.
Fit still matters in summer
Just like in winter, fit is everything. A summer wetsuit should still feel like a second skin snug around the neck, wrists, and ankles, without restricting movement. The difference is in the material: summer wetsuits use thinner, more flexible neoprene, so you get that same close fit without the bulk or the overheating. Since sizing varies across brands, always check the specific size chart or ask our team for help finding your perfect fit.
What thickness do I need for summer?
Summer wetsuits are thinner and more flexible than their winter counterparts, built for warmth without overheating. Here's what we recommend:
- 4/3 wetsuit: the in-between suit, perfect for spring, early summer, and those changeable Brouwersdam days when the sun is out but the wind keeps it fresh.
- 3/2 wetsuit: for the high summer season and sunny days.
- 2/2 shorty or short sleeve: the true summer suit, for warm water and full sun, and a perfect match for a tropical destination or warm-water holiday
Not sure which fits your sessions? Come by the shop at Brouwersdam, we'll help you figure it out.
How do I know it's time to switch from my winter wetsuit?
Your winter suit served you well. But once the water warms up, a thick 5/4 will leave you overheating before you've even caught your first wave or kited your first run. If you're sweating before you're wet, that's your sign.
What else do I need besides a wetsuit?
A few accessories make all the difference once the water warms up:
- Summer booties: thinner and more flexible than winter boots, for better board feel
- Rash guards: for the days you don't need a full wetsuit at all
- Wetsuit care products: to keep your new suit performing all season
- Sun screen: to protect your face, neck & hands
Tight, like a second skin
A summer wetsuit should still be snug all around your body, that's what keeps water from flushing in and keeps you comfortable for hours on the water. The areas that matter most are the same as in winter: neck, wrists, and ankles. The difference is that a summer suit gets you there with way less material, so you stay cool instead of cooking in the sun.

Wash your winter wetsuit
Before your winter wetsuit goes to sleep, give it the care it deserves. Rinse it with wetsuit shampoo and check its condition: are the seams and zippers still in good shape, or is it time for a small repair? A clean, well-checked wetsuit at the end of the season means it's ready to go the moment you need it again. Check all Wetsuit Care & Repair essentials.
