Have you ever wanted to surf but live far from the sea? Or are you a skateboarder seeking a new challenge? Then a surf skate might be just for you!
Surf Skates are specially designed skateboards that replicate the sensation of surfing. They feature a unique truck design that allows you to carve and pump, just like riding a wave.
Several brands offer surf skates, with popular options including Quiksilver, SmoothStar, and Slide surfskates. Each brand has its own features and styles, so it's essential to choose one that aligns with your needs and riding style. How do you select the right surf skate?
30" and smaller. These models are agile and fast, perfect for navigating through the city or spending time in the pool when practicing more radical turns. They are designed for experienced skateboarders or riders who prefer a light and compact board.
Ranging from 31" to 32" in length, these boards are versatile, providing excellent stability and agility. They are perfect for surfing, carving, and long-distance training. Suitable for all skill levels, they can also be used in skateparks and bowls.
33" and longer, these boards create long, flowing turns, making them easy to pump and build speed. This is the ideal board for long distances, suitable for both beginners and advanced riders.
Did you know? There is a beautiful location in Ouddorp near the surf shop and rental, where there is a pump track perfectly made for a great surfskate session.
If you're looking for a new way to have fun and improve your surf skills, surfskating is definitely worth a try. The combination of surfing and skateboarding provides a unique and challenging experience. So grab a surfskate and hit the streets to feel that surf vibe, wherever you are.
Last two years more brave surfers tried winter surfing than ever before. Due to the pandemic most people could not go on a trip and also sports have been cancelled. Thankfully, you could still enjoy a fresh and cold plunge in the North Sea to stay active. The rising request for neoprene on one hand together with production and shipment problems on the other hand made it difficult to always have the right stock levels. Luckily we are now back on track with the right neoprene gear. That means you don’t need to freeze in the cold water. Here we provide you with our annual guide with our latest collection of wetsuits, and neoprene accessories. And most of all a guide to help you to choose the right gear. There is a lot coming extra in winter when you think about the accessories; boots, hoods and gloves. From our own personal experience, we describe and show you how to wear it for the most optimal experience and the less cold water flushing in.
How to choose the right wetsuit in thickness - lining - sealing?
Is there a difference between kitesurfing wetsuits and surfing wetsuits?
What neoprene accessories do I need: boots, hoods and gloves?
How do I take care of my wetsuit?
How does a wetsuit work?
Neoprene thickness
Winter wetsuits come mostly in 5 mm and 6 mm. On and under the arms the neoprene is often thinner; the thickness of this neoprene is found after the slash (/). Example: 5/4 mm means 5 mm of neoprene around the torso and 4 mm on the arms. The thicker the neoprene, the more warmth but also the less flexibility.
Lining
It is not only important what is on the outside. It is also about what is on the inside, what makes a wetsuit warm. A wetsuit with a lining costs you more, but in winter time it is nice to have at least lining on the core parts of your body, to keep you warm. Besides, it also dries quicker. And you do not want to put on a wet wetsuit in winter. Every brand has their own type of lining. Rip Curl has its flash lining, Vissla has its thermal fiber lining, Manera its magma fleece etc.
Sealing
Seams are necessary to make your wetsuit fit well. But seams are also tricky because this is the first place where cold water will flush into when the sealing of the seams isn't done properly. Proper sealing results in less waste of energy to keep the thin layer of water warm.
There are many ways to seal a wetsuit, we're going to explain to you the most common ones:
Rip Curl | Quiksilver | C-Skins | Vissla
A great wetsuit will definitely keep you warm during the colder surf days but to maintain the warmth or when it is really cold you will need boots, hood and at the end gloves. We advise; to start adding the accessories in the exact order above, until it comes to the point you have to wear it all. You first start to get cold feet. Then you will lose the most warmth through your head. Gloves at the end. Just because we believe that is the most annoying accessory to wear;)
Same with wetsuits you have boots, hoods, gloves in different kinds of thickness and lining. Also, there is a difference between kitesurf/windsurf accessories and surf-oriented accessories. Your preference is all that matters considering neoprene. Warmth always comes with less flexibility. We show you the differences, explain the thickness and give suggestions on what works best when putting on your neoprene accessories.Types and differences? The difference between kitesurf and surf boots, mostly is about the sole. Kitesurf boots have a more stiffer and harder sole, that makes sure your feet don’t move so much while pushing into your strap. Surfing shoes have a bit softer sole for optimal board feeling.
Some shoes come with a round toe, where all your toes are free and able to touch one another therefore generates more heat. Then you've got a split toe, in this boot your big toe is separated from the rest, which gives you a little more stability since your feet won't be able to slip as much.
Thickness? Neoprene boots come in 5 mm or sometimes 7 mm for winter. The fleece lining the brands are using for the wetsuits you mostly find back in their boots as well. When you use a 5 mm with lining, you keep your flexibility and warmth and you usually don’t need to reach out to the 7 mm.
How to put on?
Everyone knows this feeling when your boot is full of water. Some boots have a strap on the top. The strap prevents water entering from the top of the boot. To get as little water in as possible, we put our boots under the wetsuit. So when your wetsuit is on, you pull up the legs over the boots. No matter whether it's surfing or kitesurfing.
A kitesurf wetsuit usually comes with extra straps attached to the wetsuit. Close the straps around your ankle. With an aqua flush the water flushes out anyway, without an aqua flush at least the water does not go straight into your boots.
Types and differences? There is a big difference between surfing and kitesurfing gloves. Surfing gloves can be a bit thicker, because you do not need to squeeze in anything. Kitesurfing gloves we prefer less MM as possible. Kitesurfing gloves can be pre-curved. So when you're holding the bar you don't have to work as much to keep your finger in that bar position. Less cramp.
Thickness? When you do choose surfing gloves and you go kiting, try to choose gloves which are thinner in MM. We suggest not more than 3mm for Dutch winter conditions.
How to put on? There is no difference in putting on the gloves whether surfing or kitesurfing. Same like with the boots, we put them under the wetsuit. If you have your wetsuit on, roll up your arms a bit, put your gloves on, and put the wetsuit arms over the gloves. When water comes in at the top, it will not go straight into your gloves.
Click on any glove below to see the full description or click here to see our stock in gloves.
Hopefully this article has cleared up some questions you might have had in buying a wetsuit which fits your needs. If not, you could always send us a mail with what you're looking for through this link and we'll get back to you with some fitting options.
✔ ALRIGHT NOW I'M READY TO BUY A FITTING WETSUIT AND NEOPRENE ACCESSORIES
It’s not nice but true; neoprene is not nature-friendly or sustainable at all (not yet). That is why we find it important to take care of our rubber in a way that extends the life-span of your wetsuit. This is better for our planet + for your wallet (win-win). Below you’ll find some tips & tricks to take care of your suit and to let it dry in a durable way.
There is nothing worse than putting on a wet wetsuit in winter. Your wetsuit will obviously dry faster in a warm and dry place. If you don’t have a place like this (or your partner doesn't allow you to hang your wetsuit inside because of the smell). You might consider investing in the Surflogic Wetsuit Pro Dryer. This electric dryer blows warm air into your suit constantly. Thanks to heated air you will be able to dry your wetsuit in about one hour (depending on the thickness of your wetsuit). It’s also a great gadget when you're travelling with your campervan.
On July 7th, 8th, and 9th, we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary. Three days filled with live music, DJs, various activities, chill outs, and good vibes await. We will have food trucks, a cocktail bar, a tombola, a kitesurf and foil test event, movie screenings and unforgettable parties at night.
In 2003, Jorgen Borsboom and Onno Meinen started teaching kitesurfing from a simple container on the beach. This was only the beginning of an incredible adventure. As we reach the year 2023, we realize that we have already been in this for 20 years. It's time for a celebration!
Every day there will be music from DJs, our very own house band, and many more until deep into the night.
On Saturday, you'll have the opportunity to test Kitesurf and Foil gear. Slingshot, North, F-one, and Core will be present for you to try out.
We will be holding a Tombola for Charity. Buy one or more lottery tickets and win awesome prizes like kitesurf stuff, Natural High merch, Laguna Treasures jewelry, Vans, Stance & Db merch, and much more. Part of the proceeds are going to the charity Surf2Serve.
Have an old wetsuit? Trade it in and make someone happy! At the festival, we're collecting used wetsuits to give them a second life through the Surf2Serve charity. Help others enjoy water sports by donating yours!
Stay refreshed with drinks from the cocktail bar. Plus the Famous Caipi Boys will be there. Fuel up with food from the food trucks to keep you going throughout the event.
Have you ever wanted to try one of our activities? You can experience a variety of beach activities. There will also be yoga sessions.
Face painting and a bouncy castle to keep the kids entertained. There's plenty to keep them busy and smiling all day long!
Chill out, and enjoy some good documentaries presented by Mystic Boarding.

Black Friday?? Let’s make it a Friday to go shredding...
Yes, Shred Friday (weekend) is around the corner again. The day the whole world is checking off their wishlist to bag a bargain, we and hopefully together with you, will do what we love the most. Spending time outdoors; surfing, hiking, skating. Whatever is your favorite way.
We are not against a big sale (our customers can agree on that), but we are against irresponsible and impulse buying, which people are likely to regret later. High service and good advice has always been our priority to help people buy gear that they love, will care for and have a long relationship with.
For this reason we check out(door) on Friday, November 25. Our stores close in the afternoon. We won’t be processing any online orders from 2 o’clock. Since we will use the afternoon to spend time outdoors.

#2 EDITION
— With Bowien van der Linden
Last year, we organized the very first Chicky Wing Clinics. Wingfoil clinics given by our most stoked female riders for female riders to get more women out on the water.
This was such a great success and so much fun to do, that the event is returning for a second edition this August!
In the meanwhile, the sport has grown a lot. It's great to see so many people started wing foiling.
Do you also want to get started or do you want to level up your skills? This year's Chicky Wing Clinics is for all women who'd like to start or progress in wingfoiling.
“With this event, we really like to share our excitement with other water sports women, to get more women into foiling and to have fun riding together. We believe it’s super accessible and opens new opportunities to practice water sports for everyone.”.
The second edition will take place on Saturday the 20th or Sunday the 21st of August. This year with no one less than Bowien van der Linden, the 2021 Freestyle Wing World Champion.
It will be a full afternoon program starting with coffee, healthy snacks, lots of wingfoiling and good after-session food & wine together with a group of courageous women.
We start at Natural High with a meet and greet with North rider Bowien while enjoying a nice coffee and a healthy snack to empower for the action. You will get to know each other and the day will get explained. Groups will be divided by skill level. Women who want to progress and learn how to get on the foil (we call them the progressors). And women who want to upgrade their foiling skills, those are the advanced group.
>> Never tried before? There are now also a few spots available for beginners<<
When the girl's talk is over, we drive to the wingfoil spot, which will be either at the Brouwersdam Foil Zone or at the Grevelingen, depending on the wind direction. Then it’s time to get into your wetsuit. The progressors will start directly with the foil and will get all the help from our Natural High instructors. For the ones that already can foil and want to learn how to jibe, tack or jump, Bowien is there for you to give you tips where improvements can be made to bring your wingfoil skills to a next level.
The clinic will take around 2 / 3 hours, including a little break and some time to ride on your own.
A good session will get rewarded with some good food. And of course wine cannot be missed when talking about the new experience you just have made.

Progressors: You already tried wingsurfing before and might have had a lesson. The control of the wing is there. Now you need to learn how to get on the foil safely.
Advanced: Foiling is no problem for you. You would like to improve on your jibes or tacks, or even want to learn some tricks from Bowien. You can bring your own gear or test the latest North gear.
Depending on registrations, the group will be separated into small groups of 4-5 riders, paired by similar levels.

After a chaotic two and a half years, one of our favorite events of the year is finally back again. This time, YOU get to pick a board of your own choosing from the secret shaper!
You might know 'Stab in the Dark'. If not, it's a video series where shapers design a performance board for a specific surfer. All they get is their height and weight. The surfer will test all these boards without knowing who made them and select a top ten. Sometimes they can even guess the board by just feeling. Pretty cool right?
We thought so too, so here's our parody of it: 'Grab in the Dark'.
So what’s the plan?.. You might be wondering.
We received a surfboard from one of our partners, which we've painted black.
When you guess the exact dimensions, model and shaper, you win a free surfboard!
We'll display the surfboard in our Surfshop/Surfschool in Ouddorp Duin (Old Village Dunes). You as a surfer, or not-surfer, can visit the shop and get a grab on the board and feel it to your liking. Whether you touch it, lick it or stroke it, it doesn't really matter. I mean.. Whatever you need to do.
Stop by at the shop, enjoy a coffee, some smalltalk and take your chance with the board!
Check it out at Ouddorp Duin.
Das Schiff IS BACK after the success of our parodie of ‘Die Boot’, we are finally back after two years of pandemic ;)
Everything is getting more and more expensive these days so there's no excuse not to visit us or our website for the upcoming Easter weekend.
We will be hosting one of the biggest kite & wing surf outlets of the year, where we will sell our test center gear, including kites, bars, twintips, kitesurf boards, foils, wings, wingfoil boards and more. And we will have extra deals on already discounted items;
@ Brouwersdam, Flightzone
The best bargains on test center, used gear and new gear (2021 and older) you will find at Surfshop Natural High, Brouwersdam. There will be one big area at the Flight Zone dedicated to bring you the best:
Used gear we offer in store only! But we will have live streams to show you what we got for everyone that can't come over. What are the biggest differences between harnesses?
To start, there are two different types of waist harnesses, on one side you have a hard-shell harness, like the Mystic Majestic series or the Ride Engine Saber series. On the other side you have soft-shell harnesses like the Mystic Warrior series or the Ride Engine Momentum series.
The major differences between a hard-shell and a soft-shell harness
For starters a hard-shell is way stiffer than a soft-shell harness. This means it keeps your body more in place and moves less to the side while riding hard. Next to that a hard-shell harness has a longer lifespan because it is made around a hard shell (like the name suggests). So, it won’t loose its shape.
When you put on a soft-shell it feels more comfortable, like a pillow in your back. This is because a soft-shell harness is based around a foam construction with a small shell for your back. Over time the memory foam will shape towards your back, so you have the perfect fit. The only downside of riding with a soft-shell is that over time it will lose its shape because of wearing out. If it’s worn out, you will not have any support in your harness which might result in injury’s or muscle pain.
What is the perfect harness for you?
For people that ride a lot we advise buying a hard-shell harness because it doesn’t lose its stiffness and shape. Next to the longer lifespan it is also way more supportive. What means that you can go out more often without muscle pain and getting tired.
For “beginner’s” or people that only ride during holidays we advise buying a soft-shell. A soft-shell is more than good enough to learn your first steps in kitesurfing, and with this option you will safe some money for other gear ;). The benefit of owning your own harness instead of renting one is that the memory foam can shape to your back. Besides that, the quality of a rental harness is way lower than a good soft-shell.

1 December 2021 - 31 March 2022
We said to try to make this contest an annual thing.
Here we are with a second edition.
This year in a new format. The Natural High Wave and Jump of the Winter. The idea for this surfing contest came last year when most surfers needed to stay home over winter. We wanted to show what a great playground we have right at our backdoor with the North Sea. And to point out the appreciation that you don’t always have to travel far to satisfy your needs. After last year's success we are excited to continue with that mission and to keep on sharing the surf stoke of the Lowlands!
With the Wave and Jump of the Winter video contest we like to challenge all surfers in Holland/Belgium to push themselves to the limit in an attempt to score their best wave or jump in the cold and rough North Sea this winter. Throughout a four month period 1 December 2021 - 31 March 2022, surfers around Holland and Belgium can submit a video of their pumping barrel or their biggest jump. All the entries will be judged. Crazy prizes to win. So what's new? How to participate? Read here more…
How do you enter?
What is there to win?
What are the video guidelines?
What are the judge criteria?
Contest conditions
What were the winning entries of 20/21?
We only have two disciplines to compete in: wave surfing and big air kiting. We dropped the foil discipline. To be honest we loved this discipline, just because we love to do it ourselves. However, by far this one had the littlest entries and it was also quite confusing and broadly interpretable what you understand under foiling (surf foiling, wing foiling, freestyle, slalom etc). Which made it confusing to communicate and to judge. Skipping for now, doesn't mean it’s never coming back...
The Wave of the Winter is about your greatest and most fun wave, the biggest barrel, or some send it airs. #nhwaveofthewinter
The Jump of the Winter is about big air kitesurfing.
Scoring your highest jumps in combination with some good tricks.
#nhjumpofthewinter
For the brave ones that stand behind the camera for hours just to get that one winning shot. The videographer, stating his name, automatically competes with the entry of the rider. Riders are also allowed to film from their own point of view (POV). In that case a videographer does not apply.
Any wavesurfer or kitesurfer
From 1 December 2021
till 31 March 2022
Located in The Netherlands
or Belgium
There is no maximum on entries. Also not per user. You can submit as many videos as you want.
You will receive respect and honor from the surfing Lowlands. And there are 2 main prices for the winners. Per discipline one price. Plus an extra price when the skills of a videographer have been used.
One time € 1000 cash prize
One time € 1000 cash prize
€ 250 Natural High gift card per winning entry, when videographer is present, with a maximum of two for the two disciplines.
We hope for loads of entries. Therefore we have a judge team ready that will judge all the entries.

To all you surfers, kitesurfers, foilers and beach lifestyle chasers, we know it was very hard to think ahead about what it is that you might need for your next adventure...
A fin key (you’d like to skip the finless session for now), a pump (sometimes it just happens you forgets), a M6 - 25mm screw (such a shame when you would lose that foil), or a sweater (that Nord wind here is actually pretty cold). This blog post is in Dutch, because the contest is meant for surfers who stay close to home, facing the cold Dutch and Belgium waters, this winter.
#nhwaveofthewinter
De “Jump of the Winter” ofwel big-air kitesurfing. Wie meestert de hoogste jump of dikste kiteloop. #nhjumpofthewinter
· Videographer of the Winter: Natural High Gift Card t.w.v. € 350 per winnende inzending, indien videograaf aanwezig. Het maximum kan oplopen tot drie.
Voor wie? Iedere golf-, kite- and foil surfer kan meedoen.
Looptijd?
Spot? In Nederland & België.

Usually many outdoor sports stop in winter. Days are shorter and weather is more extreme. The so-called winter-stop. Many people use winter holidays to travel to their favorite winter destination. But what when that destination got uncertain to go? When your yearly ski trip got uncertain? Given, that most things are stopping in winter, we decided to continue with our teaching program 7 days a week. To stay active. To show the possibility of practicing winter sports in your own country. And maybe this is finally the right moment for you to learn something new?
The North Sea is not a paradise in winter to learn watersports. It can be rough. It can be cold. But it can be magic too. Beaches are quiet. You have all the space in the water you need. And you can protect yourself from freezing with good neoprene we offer in our Surfshop. Following one of our courses you will need certain neoprene accessories to take part. As a student we will provide you a 10% discount on neoprene accessories. Check out also our other blog winter wetsuit guide 2021 with all the information about winter neoprene.
For all the challengers out there, we offer a winter program. Where you can continue learning and progressing in kitesurfing. Or start a new discipline and learn what foiling is about; wingsurfing or kite foiling. The lessons will be a bit shorter, but therefore private. After the lesson, you will feel satisfied, excited about your action. And think about your next move you going to make, while enjoying a nice hot chocolate or a tasty soup from our take-away.
So what discipline are you going to choose?
We started to offer wingsurf clinics since this year. And we can say; everyone is super stoked about this way of foiling. Wingsurfing is something new. And it is for everyone. And everyone will find their own way in practicing. Some go for endless wave riding, while others just want to cruise around where you are not able to go with the kite. Because you can go wingsurfing on inland water spots too.
Kite foiling offers a new challenge for the experienced kitesurfer. If you have the experience it is more a matter of whén you start learning it, rather than íf you will learn it. Once you start, you will get the flying experience within no-time. The Brouwersdam is a perfect spot for learning. It is also a very popular spot among foilers. Even the Dutch foilcup has been kept here.
Kite foiling allows you, to go more often on the water. You do not need much wind to have the perfect foil day. Some say that you can already start from 8knots. Learning is a bit easier with more wind. You can go out faster with lower wind and still you can downsize your kite with about 4m2, compared to twintip riding.
Let’s say; in 15 knots you will normally use a 12m2 with a twintip. And with kite foiling you can go with an 8m2 and still have enough power. So what investment are you going to make; a larger kite or a kite foil?
Kite foiling means more enjoyment in lower wind. It is about speed, flying over the water. Freedom will never feel so good and easy.
We got you?
When? Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday
See here more info about the course program
Check out all kite foil gear in our surfshop
Kitesurfing is already a grown-up sport. One of the great challenges is then; how to push your riding to a next level, while having fun? We can make you progress. Whether you want to learn how to jump, do a first backroll, or want to try strapless wave riding. Our experienced teachers would be very stoked to help you level-up your skills this winter.
Also, when you have no experience at all, we are there for you. Maybe kitesurfing is something you always have wanted to learn, but you could simply not find the time for it.
Is this your right moment; to progress or to start?
When? Private lessons every day, 7 days a week.

By checking this blog, you might be in the market for a swing or slingwing set. You also might be curious to what this wingsurfing is all about.
Wingsurfing is a variation of kitesurfing or windsurfing designed for easier accessibility, like at a spot where you don't have any room for throwing your kite in the air. This means that surfers can go on the water in almost any condition or location. The surf wing is a light, handheld kite that you position to catch the wind and propel you forward, pretty simple right?
Click here to learn all about wingsurfing + tutorial.
The purpose of these package deals is to give you a better accessibility into wing surfing, since it's greatly discounted. After you master the basics and want to upgrade to a smaller size board, you're able to trade in your used board for a smaller size for great discounts on your new desired size board.
These sets come in different sizes according to your level, weight and preferences.
If you're a beginner you'll want to take your weight and add (at least) 20 liters to it, that should be the board-volume to start with.
For instance;
Your profile is: 1.80m, 80KG and total new to wing surfing.
The board that probably would fit your needs is a 6'0 (80 Kg + 20L) 100L board and a larger foil. This will result in more stability and more upwards lift. Since it's a larger foil, your speed will also be reduced which only profits your learning experience.
Like is said these sets are customizable to your level. Those with some experience, probably want a smaller board and foil. But why? A smaller board and foil result in more momentum, so when you pump it doesn't hit the water that fast. This also result in reaching higher speeds and turns. The con is that it's harder to do a waterstart with a smaller board and foil than it would be with a bigger set.
What are your options?
You're interest in Wing surfing has grown after reading this article and you want to get started. We've got Wing clinics during the season, You can sign up anytime without any watersport experience. That the greatest feature to wing surfing.
With buying one of the sets above you'll also get a wing surf lesson from us for free, to give you that extra boost of confident. Find more info about our Wing surf clinics here!
For more info please reach out to us, We'll definitely be able to help you out!

We've got some tips and tricks to keep your gear safe and sound during your travels.
The most obvious one would be; which bag fits your needs.
To figure this out, cross the checklist: Where will i go, what gear will i take and are there any airline limitations?
Let's start small and take the Manera Chubby light as an example.
The Chubby is a kitebag which is 150cm in lenght, which allows you to take almost any twin-tip with you. It also comes with a great advantage, since the Chubby is only 150cm in lengt you're able to check it in as luggage instead of a boardbag. This saves lots of money.
Does this bag fit your needs?
You'll want to take this bag when twin-tips are your priority. You'll be able to stuff up to 3 kites, two twin-tips, harness, bar a wetsuit and even some additional clothes or other accessoires.
The chubby also has straps on the bottom which can make it turn it into a backpack.
You'll definitely choose one of these travelbags when your destination allows you to twin-tip and and use your surfboard. These bags will have room for all your gear plus additional clothing and wetsuits. Click on the bags for additional info.

When it is our most beloved sport and we stay in the country, we do not want to stop during winter time, just because it is getting too cold…And we don’t have to, because material now got so well fabricated that we don’t freeze anymore in the cold and windy winter days.
Here is a guide with the latest collection wetsuits, and neoprene accessories there is out at the moment. And most of all a guide to help you to choose the right gear. There is a lot coming extra in winter when you think about the accessories; boots, hoods and gloves. From our own personal experience, we describe and show you how to wear it for the most optimal experience and the less cold water flushing in.
How does a wetsuit work?
What a wetsuit basically does, is trapping a very thin layer of water inbetween your body and the suit. Your body generates warmth and heats this thin layer of water, the neoprene around this layer of water insulates this warmth and the thicker the neoprene you're wearing is, the more insulation it will provide.
The wetsuit will work at its best when the layer of water is thin and when this layer isn't flushed away by cold water trough holes or leaking points in your wetsuit. Cold water flushing into your wetsuit causes warmth & energy loss since your body needs to get to work to "re-heat" the thin layer of water.
So what we need to stay warm during winter (basically), is a wetsuit with enough neoprene, a tight fit and a proper sealing to keep the flush of cold water out of your suit.
Winter wetsuits come mostly in 5mm and 6mm. On and under the arms the neoprene is often thinner; the thickness of this neoprene is found after the slash (/). Example: 5/4mm means 5mm of neoprene around the torso and 4mm on the arms. The thicker the neoprene, the more warmth but also the less flexibility.
Lining
It is not only important what is on the outside. It is also about what is on the inside, what makes a wetsuit warm. A wetsuit with a lining cost you more, but in winter time it is nice to have at least lining on the core parts of your body, to keep you warm. Besides, it also dries quicker. And you do not want to put on a wet wetsuit in winter. Every brand has there own type of lining. Rip Curl has its flash lining, Vissla has its thermal fiber lining, Manera its magma fleece etc.
SealingSeams are necessary to make your wetsuit fit well. But seams are also tricky because this is the first place where cold water wil flush into when the sealing of the seams isn't done properly. Proper sealing results is less waist of energy to keep the thin layer of water warm.
There are many ways to seal a wetsuit, we're going to explain you the most common ones:
- Glued and Blind Stitched: At first, the neoprene panels are being glued to each other. Afterwards the seams are getting stitched "blind" to each other. "Blind" means that the stitching is only halfway through the neoprene which results in a 95% waterproof seam. This way of sealing is also known as GBS. "Normal" stitching would result in many holes in your wetsuit. (we don't want this in winter)
- Glued Blind Stitched and fully taped: In addition to the GBS the seams are equipped with a flexible taping on the inside of all of the seams. This improves the sealing, makes the seams more durable and it also improves the insulation.
- "Liquid seams and taped" : After blindstitching the neoprene panels to each other. A very strong "liquid seam" is used on the outside in combination with taping on the inside to make the wetsuit 100% waterproof. This is the most high-end way to seal a wetsuit.
Fit
The fit is about the right size. A tight fit is very important. No matter how thick or high-end your wetsuit might be, if it is too big, water is flushing in and you are getting cold. A wetsuit should feel like a second skin. Neck, arm-ends and leg-ends need to be tight.
Brand use different sizing. For example MT which stands for Medium Tall. That would be for people with a medium waist, but that are a bit taller.
Usually the fit with a chestzip is a bit nicer then with a backzip, because it’s more stretchy on the back and you do not have a stiff zipper which divides the back panel in two parts. Another advantage is that a chestzip is a bit warmer, because there is no water coming in through the zipper.
Surf-orientated & kitesurf-orientated wetsuit designs.
We offer multiple renowned wetsuit brands in our shops, a part of them is designing wetsuits with "surf-orientated" minds. The other part is designing their wetsuits with "kite/windsurf-orientated" minds. The feature that is most worth mentioning in a kite/windsurf wetsuit is "Aqua flush" or "Water strainer". This is nothing more than a perforated neoprene panel around the ankle part of the wetsuit. The holes in the panel allow water to go outside but doesn’t let water go inside. With all the upcoming water from below with kitesurfing, this is really adding comfort during your kite/windsurf session.
Surf minded wetsuit brands:
Rip curl | Quiksilver | Roxy | Hurley | Patagonia
Kite- windsurf minded brands:
This 5/4 wetsuit from Vissla is made to get you through the wintersurf. But how?
This double blind stitched and fully taped wetsuit is ideal for cool water temperatures. The 5/4 refers to the thickness of the wetsuit. With new and improved fit for better range of motion. Anatomically correct engineered body lines with minimal seams for unrestricted warmth and performance.
Click here for more info about the 5/4 hooded Vissla wetsuit.
The Vissla 5/4 hooded key features:
• Super stretch neoprene, which makes it lighter, warmer, softer and gives more freedom of movement.
• Thermal hollow fiber lining, this lining insulates more heat and dries faster. Which is great when you've got one wetsuit to use.
• Tripled glued, double blind stitched and fully taped seams that provide minimal water entry and offers more strength to the seams.
A great wetsuit will definitely keep you warm during the colder surf days but to maintain the warmth or when its really cold you'll probably will need neoprene gloves or boots.
Neoprene gloves come in different styles and sizes. There is no right or wrong answer to what gloves are best for you. Like every wetsuit, it should fit your needs and what you prefer in performance. There's also a big difference in surfing and kitesurfing gloves. Kitesurfing gloves are pre bent so when you're holding the bar you don't have to work your finger that much. When you do choose surfing gloves and go kiting, try to choose gloves which are smaller in MM so like up to 3mm.

A great wetsuit will definitely keep you warm during the colder surf days but to maintain the warmth or when its really cold you'll probably will need neoprene gloves or boots.
To complete your Winter neoprene gear, good neoprene boots are a must. There are quite some different brands offering neoprene boots and they all have their own style, pro's and cons. These neoprene boots come in different thickness, just like a wetsuit. obviously a 7mm boot is going to be warmer than a 2mm. But it depends on what you're looking for. Warmth, flexibility or feel? Your Preference's is al that matters in all cases considering neoprene. There's also a difference in design, some shoes come as a round toe, where all your toe's are free and able to touch one another therefore generates more heat. Then you've got a split toe, in this boot your big toe is separated from the rest, which gives you a little more stability since your feet won't be able to slip as much.
